Ghost Shrine

Knowing or perhaps not knowing my love for the occult,a friend of mine, A, who I wasn’t very close to, started talking to me.
Not just “not close”
—I had stolen his girlfriend,so things were definitely awkward (though A hadn’t found out).
A said, “I’ve seen ghosts twice at the ○△ Shrine. You live nearby, right? Never go there at 1 a.m.”
If someone were easily scared, they’d avoid the place entirely, even during the day after hearing that.
But me? I couldn’t resist—I was itching to go.
The shrine was surrounded by mountains on all sides, and the only way in was by climbing a 40- or 50-step staircase.
But I chose a hidden route—a rough path cutting through the woods—because I knew it well and wanted to observe the ghosts from the shadows.
When I checked the time, it was 20 minutes early.
“Maybe I came too soon,”
I thought, as I looked around carefully.
That’s when I noticed a shadowy figure near the spot where the stairs would lead.
“Here it comes—a ghost!”
I thought, squinting to get a better look.
It turned out to be A, hiding and holding a kitchen knife.
